Collection: OSUSUME OF THE WEEK: Harakake/Harakake

Authentic Harakake/Harakake for festivals and Taiko players.

Harakake was originally men's underwear that became widely popular in the late Edo period. It was a type of underwear that covered the chest and stomach, and it is said that it was created with the aim of keeping the body warm when wearing traditional Japanese clothes such as kimono and hakama. Later, it became popular as work clothes for carpenters, fishermen and other craftsmen because of its lightness and ease of movement. Now that Western-style clothing has become common in Japan, the only time you're likely to see harakake is at festivals.  Harakake is as popular as Happy/Happi Coats in festivals and at Taiko performances.
