Tabi, the Japanese socks for kimono, comes in two types: 4-kohaze (metal fastener) and 5-kohaze. 5-kohaze is considered to be more formal because it covers more of the ankle.
If it's not the perfect size, it's not supposed to be stylish. Now the stretch tabis are available and it may be easier to wear them to get the perfect size.
